Software upgrade could be cause of US airline disruption

upgA computer glitch that disrupted airline traffic in some parts of the U.S. over the weekend was possibly the result of a software upgrade, the Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday.

The agency, which had earlier described a problem in its “automation system” as the cause of the disruption, said the problem could be possibly traced to a recent software upgrade at a high-altitude radar facility in Leesburg, Virginia.

The upgrade was designed to provide additional tools for controllers, the agency said. While the FAA and its system contractor complete their assessment, the new features have been disabled.

The agency said that there was no indication that the disruption was related to any inherent problems with the En Route Automation Modernization system, which it claims has had a greater than 99.99 availability rate since it was completed nationwide earlier this year. ERAM replaced the 40-year-old En Route Host computer and backup system used at 20 FAA Air Route Traffic Control Centers nationwide.

FAA said that the automation problem had led to delays and cancellations at airports in the Washington, D.C., area on Saturday, with preliminary information indicating 492 related delays and 476 cancellations.

The FAA brought down the arrival and departure rates in the area from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for safety reasons. That move resulted in about 70 percent of the average normal Saturday traffic at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, 72 percent at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and 88 percent at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Microsoft waives Windows 10 ‘branches’ for now

softwareMicrosoft will not begin using Windows 10’s multiple update tracks, called “branches” by the Redmond, Wash. firm, until later this year, analysts said, and in the interim will continue to push all updates to everyone at the same time.

“We’re not going to see anything concrete until we see Windows 10 Mobile,” predicted Wes Miller of Directions on Microsoft, in an interview last week. “We only have one part of the family at this point.”

Miller’s bet is that Microsoft will wait until Windows 10 Mobile officially reaches production quality — a milestone expected this fall — before priming the branch pump. With Windows 10 Mobile out, the clan of operating systems will be in place.

Those branches will separate Windows 10’s users into different update tracks, getting fixes as well as new features and functionality to customers on different schedules.

Branches are a radical departure from Windows’ historic servicing and maintenance model, which offered updates and upgrades to everyone simultaneously, then let customers decide whether they moved forward or stayed in place. As a crucial component of the “Windows as a service” theme Microsoft has promoted, branches will deliver the constant cadence of changes that will let the company evolve the OS over time rather than simply replace it with the next in line. In most cases, users will be required to accept the updates on their given branch; not doing so will mean a stoppage of security patches.

For example, the Current Branch (CB) — the only available to consumers running Windows 10 Home — will deliver updates before the Current Branch for Business (CBB), the track accessible from Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise. The third mainstream branch, dubbed Long-term Servicing Branch (LTSB), can be adopted only by devices running Windows 10 Enterprise that are also covered by Software Assurance plans.

In Microsoft’s scheme, updates distributed to the CB reach systems first, with the same updates delivered to CBB devices at least a month later (in some cases as much as a year later). LTSB machines can forego all but security updates indefinitely.

Meanwhile, within each branch there will exist at least two “rings,” or sub-divisions, that allow users to jump to the front of the queue, or delay deliveries for days or even weeks.

But Microsoft has yet to debut either branches or rings. Rather, in the two-plus weeks since the operating system’s July 29 launch, it has distributed a series of cumulative updates — their contents described in only the most general terms — to all users at the same time.

That will probably be the practice for the next several months. “Microsoft has enough to be worried about, especially getting this [initial] rollout of Windows 10 to go smoothly,” said Steve Kleynhans of Gartner.

The company’s focus on getting Windows 10 into customers’ hands will require its complete attention until at least September, probably longer, Kleynhans argued. “We’re definitely looking at months [to complete the Windows 10 rollout]. Microsoft is being pretty cautious at looking at machines” to authorize upgrades only to those capable of running the new OS, he added.

In fact, there’s little rush for Microsoft to enable branches and rings, in large part because while some small businesses or organizations running Windows 10 Pro may leap at the free upgrade — a deal valid until late July 2016 — the majority of those migrating to Windows 10 in 2015 will be consumers, who will be almost entirely on the get-it-first, can’t-refuse-or-delay-it Current Branch.

In any case, Microsoft wasn’t expected to ship the first significant refresh until about four months after release, or by late November or early December.

Still, the new servicing model and its associated branches are critical to Windows 10’s success, or at least to the strategy Microsoft has adopted. Seeing it in action, and judging whether it’s workable, will be a big moment for the new OS as well as for Microsoft’s reputation.

Tap the circle next to the message (or messages) you want to delete so a blue checkmark icon appears. Finally, tap the trash can icon in the lower left, then confirm that you want to delete the message when prompted.

Delete an entire conversation

Perhaps you really don’t want that entire conversation between you and that bot that sends you iCloud login codes. To remove entire conversations from your phone, return to the main Messages screen, then swipe right to left across the conversation you want to delete. Next, tap the red Delete button that appears.

To remove multiple conversations at once, tap the Edit button in the upper left, then tap the circle next to the conversations you want to delete so that a blue checkmark icon appears. Tap Delete in the lower right, and those conversations will be deleted from your phone.

By default, Messages is a bit of a digital pack rat, and it’ll hang onto every message you’ve sent or received on your phone. But you can easily limit how long Messages holds onto things.

Open the Settings app, then tap Messages. Next, tap Keep Messages–it’s under the Message History subheading. Here, you can choose to keep text messages for all eternity, or force Messages to clear out anything more than 30 days or one year old. (Unfortunately, you can’t specify any other length of time.) Pick the option that works for you, and Messages will clear out all messages older than the date you pick.

The model of the future is based on social, mobile, cloud and big data, and IT is realizing that to succeed it must have the right processes, tools and culture. This is where open source is a major benefit.

Once you’ve decided to make open source a key feature of your enterprise IT infrastructure, here are steps you should take:

* Identify critical dependencies: It’s important to determine which components of an open source deployment represent critical dependencies. These are the ones you need to be fully certain about in terms of community size, robustness, feature suggestions and more. When it comes to components that represent dependencies, it’s important to ensure you don’t get locked into something that isn’t the perfect fit.

ACTION: Survey your open source use and determine which projects/products you’re using. Separate into useful, important, and critical. Ensure you have on-staff or commercial support for all critical and any important projects that are used in mission-critical or customer-facing projects. A commercial product like Black Duck can help to identify which open source products/projects you’re using.

* Build open source skills: Unlike proprietary vendors’ products, open source doesn’t come with a help desk. Self-reliance is a necessity, and to fully engage in open source there must exist a willingness to learn and develop open source skills.

ACTION: Given the project/product survey executed for the previous step, identify important skills needed to succeed with critical and important projects and begin a program to infuse those skills. For current recruiting, add open source skills to candidate evaluation. For current staff, survey for skills and begin a training regimen to educate staff. Develop future staffing plan to recruit new talent with uncovered skills.

* Determine what to contribute and what to keep internal: With any code you write, decide where to place it. Always remember that if you contribute it to the product, your code will become part of the product and be present in future releases.

ACTION: Identify all code written to extend or integrate open source projects/products. For all extending code (i.e., code that resides inside the project/product and implements additional functionality) take a default position that it should be contributed to the upstream code base. For integration code, evaluate how much, if any, could be contributed to the upstream code base of a project/product and do so. For any integration code that must be kept in-house, ensure you have a long-term maintenance approach and budget to support. If you do not currently have an open source policy and process that supports code contributions, develop one stat.

* Understand that open source isn’t a one-size fits all approach: Although open source deployments offer a number of advantages, that doesn’t mean it should be used for every application. There will be instances where a proprietary product is a better fit. It’s important to recognize and understand which components of your project are better suited to open source, and which aren’t.

ACTION: Ensure that every software component evaluation looks at both proprietary and open source options. Develop a structured evaluation process and criteria used in evaluations to ensure common approach and impartial decision-making. Of course, be sure to factor in ongoing investment necessary to work with an open source project/product to ensure apples to apples comparisons.

* Be active in communities: What largely makes open source succeed is the fact that people are constantly improving the software. Having users take an active approach is key, and likewise, working with open source project leaders when changing code. Sharing successful strategies also helps strengthen the community — after all, successful adoption of open source is based on the best practices and experiences of others.

ACTION: Attend local and national open source-related meetups and conferences. Identify staff to get involved in important and critical open source projects/products and support their involvement. Consider financial support for important and critical projects/products.

* Last, but certainly not least, beware what we call the “new legacy”: Many IT organizations leverage open source components to build new applications, but overlook the reality that those applications become an ongoing engineering commitment. Many IT organizations have built home-grown DevOps tool chains that string together open source components. The problem is that, down the road, the original engineers have left and the undocumented system is a mess, and then those organizations realize that open source can result in legacy too.

Being free and flexible isn’t a sufficient reason to decide you’re now in the open source-based application business. Every line of code you write becomes an ongoing responsibility.
